Furnishing the
Home Office

The desk or workstation is obviously the most important piece of furniture
in your office. The "Interactive Desk" shown here and available from Workspaces,
Inc. is an example of the latest in ergonomic design. At $895
in maple or pearwood laminate, or $1195 in cherry veneer, this is a great
option. If you'd like to save a few dollars, contact Workspaces via
their site and ask about their 20% price reduction on blemished items.
Of course used desks and furniture and can be obtained from local used
office furniture stores for much less.
Another solution is the old "door on the file cabinets" trick. A hundred
and fifty bucks buys a lot of horizontal and file space. This is not likely
a solution if receiving customers in the office is a concern, but its quick,
easy, and inexpensive. Although if you're going to be in the office at
the desk for long hours every day, think about comfort. Finally, what the
desk is used for is a big consideration. If the computer is the main use
then center decisions around that. Be aware that most home offices eventually
use more than one computer per office and remember the printer, copier,
fax, telephone, and perhaps scanner that all offices need. Horizontal space
is very necessary and most people need more than they originally think.
Unfortunately, that natural law of the universe that states "paper will
expand in proportion to the horizontal space available" still applies.
The desk chair is really just as important as the desk for the home office. One of the best innovations in recent years is the adjustable arm office chair. This feature can go a long way toward reducing shoulder and neck strain, and for heavy computer users, carpal tunnel syndrome. Chairs can range from a hundred dollars to a thousand. Fortunately the web is full of suppliers of both desks and chairs, and other office furniture as well. Here is some more information about selecting a chair and be sure to check the links below before making a purchase. Web Links to Information About Office Furniture
